Under 18: Upstart Activist (UP’s), Youth Volunteer Program
In Partnership with XTL Youth Empowerment Program and Youth Program Coordinator. Prospective volunteers under the age of 18 are required, in lieu of a background check, to submit a Letter of Reference from a Sponsor such as a mentor, teacher, clinician, etc., to describe their abilities and character. Required documents must be signed by the youth and the Sponsor. A Sponsor must be actively engaged in the Youth’s learning and development while volunteering with Affirmations. Youth under the age of 14 will not be accepted. Youth actively participating in Affirmations’ Youth Empowerment Programs have priority. Affirmations’ Youth Program Coordinator can be assigned as a youth Sponsor.

    Cross the Line (XTL) Youth Workforce Development Program

    XTLyouthA 16-week program designed to empower LGBTQ+ youth in the metro Detroit area with the soft and hard skills necessary for successful workforce navigation. Utilizing theoretical and practical application, this program provides interactive training and on-the-job training. During the program period, XTL Youth Workforce Development Program will serve up to 15 metro Detroit youth ages 13-24.




    Cross the Line (XTL) Youth Leadership Development

    XTLyouthA 16-week program designed to empower up to 40 LGBTQ+ youth, ages 13-20 with leadership skills particularly focusing on issues surrounding LGBTQ+ youth. Leadership skills utilized from curricula that focuses on understanding power and privilege, LGBTQ+ 101, facilitation skills, presentation skills, creative advocacy approaches, mentorship, community engagement, and social risks prevention such as bullying, HIV/STI, domestic violence and sexual assault. We work with our BAC (Business Advisory Counsel) to guide and mentor the youth through the program.

     

    Carl Rippberger Youth Drop-in Center

    XTLyouth

     

    The Carl Rippberger Youth Drop-In Center provides a safe place for youth to engage their peers for networking, fun, and learning. The Center is open Fridays and Saturdays, 4 p.m.-9 p.m. for youth, between the ages of 13 and 20 (adults are not allowed in the space unless they are trained adult allies (volunteers). This Center is equipped with an XBOX 360 and assorted games, pool table, board games, WIFI, Netflix, and much more. The Center also features movie and game nights and youth-led discussion groups.

    Artist Heaven Event

    XTLyouthLet Artist Heaven inspire your creativity! Join us on Friday, October 13th, 6:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. to be uplifted, educated and inspired through various forms of art. Please RSVP to Ian Unger at iunger@goaffirmations.org or call (248) 398-7105.






    Nightmare on Queer Street Dance

    XTLyouthAre you between ages 13-20? Come get scary on October 27th, 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. and dance the night away at the center! Come in costume or come as you are. For more information, contact Ian Unger at iunger@goaffirmations.org or call (248) 398-7105.







    Recess Cafe Grand Opening

    XTLyouthJoin the Youth of Affirmations on Wednesday, November 8th for an open mic night and the grand opening of the Recess Cafe!
