A Letter from Cheryl Czach

Dear Affirmations Community,
Affirmations captured my heart over a decade ago during a moment I’ll never forget. While volunteering at the front desk, I witnessed a young transgender woman enter the center seeking help after being rejected by her parents upon coming out. Through tears, she told me, “I didn’t know what to do. But I knew if I could just make it to Affirmations, everything would be okay.” I then watched in awe as the team sprang into action, securing her shelter for the night and arranging transportation for continued support the following day. At that moment, I understood the vital importance of our work. We aren’t just a community center; we’re a lifeline.
It has been one of life’s greatest privileges to serve as Executive Director of an organization that provides hope, inclusion, and support for many. As I reflect on my time with Affirmations, I feel deep gratitude for everyone who has contributed to our mission, including supporters, staff, board members, and the community who have helped shape our work.
After thoughtful consideration, I have decided to transition from my full-time role at Affirmations, effective May 15. I will continue part-time through June to support a smooth transition and work with Tracy Hall, who will serve as the Interim Executive Director. While changes inevitably bring mixed emotions, I approach this decision with genuine optimism for both my next chapter and the bright future that awaits Affirmations.
During our time together, we have made important progress that has strengthened our programs and connection to the community. We hired our first Director of Health and Human Services. With her leadership, we added new therapists, grew the intern program, launched psychiatry services, and introduced group therapy shaped by community input. Our Youth Programming expanded through the formation of a youth advisory council, improvements to the drop-in program, a new young adult group, and the start of art-based activities. Community support has deepened through expanding discussion, support, and social groups with a tailored response to the evolving needs within our community. Perhaps most importantly, we collaboratively developed a comprehensive three-year strategic plan that will guide Affirmations toward sustainable growth. More on that coming soon!
Having been part of the Affirmations family for over a decade, I can confidently say the center stands stronger than ever. This strength comes from an exceptional team and a forward-thinking board whose shared vision for 2025 and beyond is both inspiring and attainable. It’s a rare and meaningful opportunity to be able to hand off a leadership role with such confidence. I’m thrilled to transition this work to incredibly capable hands, knowing the organization is well-positioned for continued impact and expanded reach.
Thank you for allowing me to be part of this transformative journey. Though my role is changing, my commitment to our mission remains unwavering. I’ll be cheering on Affirmations as it continues to empower, inspire, and ensure that no one in our LGBTQ+ community has to face hardship alone.
With profound gratitude,
