Affirmations’ Volunteer and Intern Spotlight: Amanda McBride
Affirmations has been incredibly fortunate to receive the support of volunteers like Amanda McBrideand interns since our founding in 1989. Volunteers work throughout Affirmations beginning at our Welcome & Resource Desk and extending through the youth program, and even special events! In the following Q & A, Affirmations’ Volunteer Amanda McBride talks about her deep commitment here at our LGBTQ+ Center.
- How long have you been involved with Affirmations?
I’ve been Volunteering since May of 2019.
- What made you want to get involved with the internship program?
I fell in love with the energy and wanted to be a part of it somehow. Volunteering was seriously the perfect opportunity!
- Why is Affirmations important to you? What has been your favorite part about your experience so far?
Affirmations is important to me because it’s welcoming, affirming, casual, fun, and free! Spaces like the Center need to be more common. Recently, we just had our grand opening of the David Bohnett Cyber Center! I love being able to help those Center Guests who come into the newly renovated space to utilize the brand new computers, available for anyone to use!
- Are you involved with any specific groups at Affirmations?
For now, I volunteer at the Front Desk but I’m interested in getting involved in some of the groups we have here. LGBTQ+ Millenials and Lesbian Euchre sound like fun ones. I think my kids would love the Youth programs and the Drop-In Center once they turn 13!
- What are you passionate about outside of Volunteering?
I am a caretaker. I have 2 kids and take care of my grandma. Besides my family, I love to adventure and travel!
