Arts & Culture at Affirmations

Affirmations recognizes we have a responsibility to preserve, incubate, and elevate the creativity of our community by providing space, visibility, and opportunity for LGBTQ+ artists and culture-makers.

Affirmations supports the vibrant arts and culture community of Southeast Michigan by creating space for music, digital media, cinema, open mics, and visual art. Art has long been central to how LGBTQ+ communities share stories, build connection, and express pride. As a hub for LGBTQ+ culture, Affirmations welcomes community members, artists, and allies into a space designed for gathering and celebration. Visitors are invited to explore the Pittman-Puckett Gallery, shop artist markets, or attend cultural and community events throughout the year. Throughout the year, Affirmations hosts queer craft, merchandise, and fashion vendors through a variety of low-barrier markets that remain accessible to both artists and community members. Whether you are coming to view an exhibition, experience live music or film, share your voice at an open mic, or support queer-owned businesses, Affirmations offers a space where creativity, identity, and community meet.

Gallery Liaison

Light is a seasoned and talented artist and advocate who is deeply passionate about increasing accessibility and breaking down barriers for student, local, and established artists alike. In their role, they connect and support artists working across a wide range of media, including painting, ceramics, digital art, and more.

Showcasing LGBTQ+ Artists

Founded in memory of Christine Pittman and Susan Puckett, two of Affirmations’ earliest and most devoted volunteers, the Pittman Puckett Gallery honors a moment when community members met uncertainty with creativity, care, and boldness.
At a time when LGBTQ+ people were building safety and visibility with limited resources, Christine and Susan understood that art was essential to connection and belonging. Their vision helped shape Affirmations as a place where expression, gathering, and community could exist side by side.

Today, the Pittman Puckett Gallery continues that legacy as an exhibition and performance space for LGBTQ+ artists, both established and emerging, whose work reflects and celebrates our community. Gallery exhibitions are open to the public during Affirmations’ open hours.
